Following are four moving and storage tips to ensure a seamless process whether you're moving across country or across town.
4 Moving and Storage Tips
1. Choosing a moving and storage facility: Location is probably the first thing you want to keep in mind here. This is particularly important if you're going to be accessing your belongings regularly.
Make sure the facility has proper security. This includes video surveillance, a key-card access system and proper lighting. Other things you want to ask about are fire alarms, smoke alarms and sprinklers. All of these go directly to the security of your items – from man and nature.
The final thing you want to look for in a moving and storage facility are the amenities it offers. For example, do they provide boxes and packing supplies; do they have loading docks; do they have 24-hour access. All of these will be important at some point.
2. Properly Storing Items: When choosing a moving and storage facility, ask about amenities like organizational shelving and hanging bars. All of this helps you to properly store your items.
This is particularly helpful if your belongings are going to be in storage for a long time. Following are three tips for properly storing items in a moving and storage facility:
(i) Cover: Ideally, everything should be covered. Furniture, mattresses and box springs should be draped with blanket-like coverings. Books and personal items should be in boxes. Clothing should be in suitcases, garment bags or boxes.
(ii) Organize: You can never be too organized, even in a moving and storage facility. Organize from back to front. Obviously, all the stuff you might need to get to on a regular basis should be up front. Larger items like furniture would be stored in back.
(iii) Protect against the elements: Most moving and storage facilities have some type of climate control. To further protect against the elements though, you might want to consider using rust protector on things like large appliances and bicycles, for example.
(iv) Disassemble: For a better fit, and to protect them, larger items like tables should be dismantled before being stored. This way, each part can be individually wrapped for protection.
Although most moving and storage facilities have spaces to accommodate almost anything, the more you can fit into one, the less it will cost.
3. Insurance: Although most moving and storage facilities carry insurance to protect against things like fire, you should insure your property through your own policy while they are in storage.
Call your insurance agent to see if your property can be covered under your homeowners insurance policy, or your renter's policy.
If they aren't this can usually be added for a nominal fee to your existing policy.
4. What You Shouldn't Store: There are some things most moving and storage companies either outright forbid you to store, or strongly advise you not to store.
Some of these are food, perishables, animals (yes, people do try!) and hazardous material.
