Moving with all of your belongings is different from moving and putting them in storage. When your things come with you, they are packed for only a short time, so usually you can break a few packing rules with no consequences.
However, when you're packing your belongings for a stay in storage, that's completely different. Following are five self-storage tips to help you protect your belongings that you may not be familiar with.
Self-Storage Tip #1: Cover the Cement Floor
Most self-storage facility owners advise that you always cover the cement flower with plastic – not cloth or paper, but plastic.
This distinction is important because cement is porous. This means that condensation leaks through it. A nonporous barrier like plastic is the only thing that can stop this. Even though the condensation is so minor that most of the time it's not noticeable, if your items are going to be in storage for a while, it could cause damage.
Self-Storage Tip #2: Protect Against the Elements
As mentioned above, condensation happens in almost every self-storage unit. You can help to protect against this by using things like rust repellant. Particularly for appliances, they should be stored with doors open; this keeps them fresh and dry. Always clean your appliances before storing them. This prevents against mold and mildew growth.
Dust is a cousin of rust. To prevent it from causing harm to the items kept in your self-storage unit, use appropriate moving materials like mattress covers, dust covers and shrink wrap.
Self-Storage Tip #3: Packing Dishes and Books
When packing books and dishes to go into your self-storage unit, pack correctly. Following are some packing tips for these items.
Packing books: Books should be packed flat. This protects their spine. One tendency when packing books is to cram as many into a box as you can get. Paper, ie books, are heavy when packed together. Pack them in smaller boxes. This makes for easier lifting.
Packing dishware: Ideally, you should use dish and glass packing kits when packing dishware. Barring that, take the time to wrap each dish individually. And, plates should be stacked on edge. This helps to guard against breakage. One final note about packing dishes, pad the bottom of the box with packing paper.
Self-Storage Tip #4: The Proper Use of Plastic
Remember the condensation we discussed in Tip #2 above? You shouldn't cover your items plastic because it is a nonporous agent, meaning that it holds everything. So, if condensation gets under it, it can cause mold, mildew and a host of other unpleasantries.
When you cover items in a self-storage unit, use a breathable fabric like a blanket. Most self-storage unit facilities offer the best options for coverage – eg, moving blankets.
Self-Storage Tip #5: Boxes are Your Friend
There's a reason the cardboard box is an essential moving item. They offer the best protection for your belongings, they are mobile, they come in various sizes and they are inexpensive.
Stock up on them!
